A Mother's Worry

Will I miscarry? Is bub getting enough nutrients to grow despite my morning sickness? Is bub's weight gain enough? Is he or she getting enough milk? Why can't he walk yet when his peers can? Why isn't she talking? Does a mother's worry every stop?

I pondered this today when Miss 2 refused to eat any lunch and had very little breakfast and no morning tea. Why won't she eat and why do I have such a fussy eater on my hands? Then I recalled the phone call I received yesterday morning from a close friend of 17 years who was seeking my opinion on her 15 month son and his eating. "I'm worried I feed him to much" was her concern...she then went onto say he eats everything from cherry tomatoes & cucumber to ham & cream cheese sandwiches, all day every day. My initial thoughts were WOW if only Miss 2 would eat 1/3 of the things Mr 15 month ate I'd be a very happy mum. However when I look at the big picture both Miss 2 and Mr 15 months are both in the healthy weight range....so why do we continue to worry?

Even myself as an Early Childhood Consultant, I know what the developmental milestones are and what to look out for when it comes to 'the need to be concerned', but I still worry constantly and continue to have to reassure myself that everything is and will be ok.

As a Counsellor I think it needs to be highlighted that the continual worry and anxieties we have can sometimes take away from the joys of parenting. The hours we spent on a particular day looking up the internet and books to satisfy our concerns on an issue of pregnancy and/or child development with our toddler running around entertaining themselves, is hours we have missed out on sitting and playing with them, exploring the world and extending their learning. This is not to say we should not allow ourselves the time to research and read, but what I am saying is lets try to put it in perspective. Let's take each and every moment we can to cherish our children, play with them and try to let our worries lose themselves in our time spent with our cherubs. Time we cannot get back.

There are definitely times when we need to worry, seek clarification or assistance, but for a lot of us and you know who you are...worry can sometimes dictate our lives to our own and our children's detriment. If worry is taking over your life, seek some assistance in learning ways to overcome this.

We need to have faith, trust in our own abilities and believe that things in life will turn out for the best, that things happen for a reason and that there is a positive to most situations.

Upon googling a mother's worry, I found the following poem:

A Mother's Worry Never Ends

We worry from the time we conceive.
Will they make it to trimester three?

We worry about how much they eat
and even when we they poop and pee.

We worry when they're two and three,
all the scraps, bumps and boo-boo'd knees.

We worry about them cutting hair
and how much of their sister's they're willing to spare.

We worry about all the teeth that must come free
and if they will need Orthodontistry.

We worry if they will pass the class,
from their first day of school until their last.

We worry about them going off to college
and if we gave them enough knowledge.

We worry for them when their heart does break
and the scar that they might never shake.

We worry for them on their wedding day,
that the love they share may never fade.

We worry for them when their baby comes
now their worrying has just begun.

A Mother's worry never ends.
It just evolves and grows and starts again.

Parenting Consistency

Consistency gives a child a sense of security. Providing consistency from the start enables children to learn what they can expect from their parents and enhances bonding. For example, a baby is quick to learn that when they cry, a consistent parent will respond to them by providing them a breast or bottle, changing their nappy or giving them a cuddle. This teaches them that they can rely on their parents and trust that their needs will be met. Right from the start babies learn about the world and they need consistent messages to enable them to make connections about the world around them.

Consistency Will:
- Reduce your child testing and resisting boundaries and guidelines
- Provide a sense of security for your
- Teach your child that 'no' means 'no'
- Assist in teaching listening
- Lead to well-balanced children who are respectful
- Promote healthy and happy communications
- Teach children 'cause and effect'
- Promote a Unified Family

With only 6 weeks until Christmas there is no better time to start teaching our children the importance of being grateful.

Gratitude is an important quality to teach our children. Studies have shown that grateful people are happier, more resilient, have higher self-esteem and build healthier relationships. Gratitude does not develop naturally, rather we need to model, teach, encourage and install gratitude within our children. As Christmas approaches and children give and receive gifts it is a perfect time to focus on teaching our children this quality. Here are a few suggestions:

Model thanks - thank your children for cleaning up, giving you a hug, listening to you, etc.
Assign chores - have a list of chores that your child must do, this teaches children that their contributions are important and allow them to see how they benefit from what other's do, such as you doing their laundry.
Have rituals - such as sharing a favourite part of your child's and your day before bedtime and including discussions about what they have been thankful for during that day.
Expect your child to thank you for what you do for them, such as thanking you for their dinner
Sit down with your child and write thank you notes to people that they receive gifts from, including a sentence as to why they liked that particular gift or how they will use it.
Engage your children in volunteering or helping out - this may be for a charity organisation, an elderly family member or neighbour or even choosing a Christmas tag off the Target or Kmart tree and contributing a gift.

Parenting can be Rewarding, Fun and Fulfilling yet does not come with a manual and can be frustrating and at times we can feel we are at breaking point! Parenting is to raise a child and educate them the best we can to create socially responsible individuals. Through parenting we educate our children, providing an education which differs from that which a school provides. As parents we need to focus on the five main areas of child development: cognitive (learning and problem solving), social and emotional, speech and language, fine motor skills and gross motor skills. Ensuring that a child is developing in all of these areas aids the transition from early childhood into schooling and ensures that our children are emotionally, intellectually, physically and socially secure in society.
